BoU Director To Be Charged At Anti-Corruption Court Over Excess Cargo

By Andrew Irumba

Kampala: Another Bank of Uganda official has landed in trouble because of the ongoing investigation into the excess cargo saga the Bank is engulfed in.

Charles Malinga, the BoU  director of currency, is to be arraigned in  the Anti-Corruption Court to answer charges related to the illegal consignment that was shipped into Uganda in April. In fact, he could appear today. Sources close to the investigation revealed that Malinga’s file had been forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecution for further perusal. Malinga is brother of Bukedea Woman MP, Anita Among.

Sources reveal that Malinga could be added to the charge sheet of two other officials, Francis Kakeeto, 36, and Fred Vito Wanyama, 42, who were charged with abuse of office and corruption at the Anti-corruption court last week. Prosecution alleges that the duo corruptly neglected to perform their duty when they failed to refute and report the inclusion of unauthorized cargo on a plane fully chartered by Bank of Uganda, which constituted a procurement anomaly and were remanded till today June 25th, when they are supposed to appear in court again for a bail application.
