Kampala: A day after MP Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine being remanded to Luzira prisons, ‘Free Bobi Wine’ protest have started rocking various parts of Uganda.
Since morning Tuesday the police have been running battles with protesters in Kisekka market and other parts of down town Kampala, who demand the immediate release of Bobi Wine. Sources at Firebase base offices in Kamwokya reveal that plain clothed security men stormed the facility this morning and arrested some People Power supporters they found there.
The Police also on Tuesday engaged in battles with protesters in Makindye and Kitintale, both city suburbs, who were protesting against Bobi’s arrest and imprisonment. However, all this comes at a time when imprisonment of Bobi Wine, who heads the People Power pressure group, has attracted the attention of several international politicians, who are demanding for his release.
For instance, American Senator Bob Menendez while commenting about Bobi Wine’s arrested tweeted thus; Persecuting political opponents won’t make the government in #Uganda more popular. Eroding civil liberties, attacking fundamental freedoms, and closing political space is a sign of weakness—NOT strength.”
