Uganda Cooperative Alliance (UCA) Limited has written to members of the cooperative movement to disassociate with Uhuru Institute for Social Development, TheSpy Uganda reports exclusively.
The development follows a disagreement over supremacy and UCA has since vowed to engage in mass media campaigns against Uhuru Institute for Social Development.
“UCA is the only voice of the cooperative movement both nationally and internationally. UCA is legally mandated to advise the government on cooperative movement policy, resolve disputes between and within cooperatives, advise and mobilize resources for societies,” Ivan Asiimwe, UCA Chief Executive Officer said asking Ugandans to ignore Uhuru Institutes’ ‘unlawful’ engagements.
“The Uhuru Institute is not a registered cooperative society but rather a limited liability company with private interests,” UCA boss added, “Uhuru is seeking to divide the movement, serve personal or private interests and political scores.”
UCA Chairman Mr Jonas Tweyambe says the activities of Uhuru Institute for social development are divisive of cooperators and demeaning of the apex body and its officials are outside the ambit of the movement and do not reflect the values and principles of cooperatives.
“The Uhuru Institute for Social Development has no legal mandate to organize cooperators at any time for matters related to the cooperative movement unless it has sought approval from the Registrar of Cooperatives and the apex body,” Tyeyambe stressed.
UCA Ltd is the umbrella Organisation for all cooperatives in Uganda established in 1961. It serves as the voice of the cooperative movement at both the national and international levels with a mandate to recommend to the government on matters of policy relating to cooperatives arbitration.
The Uhuru Institute for Social Development is a registered business entity founded in June 2013 to train cooperatives on savings and business management skills.
In a notice also copied to Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah, Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Minister of State for Cooperatives, Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), Registrar/ Commissioner for Cooperatives, Resident District Commissioners (RDCs), District Commercial Officers (DCOs) and Cooperative Unions, Tweyambe warned that “any cooperative society which deals with the Uhuru institute for social development with regard to any activity or event attributed to the cooperative movement does so at its own risk.”
